An Investigation of Communication System Performance in a Hospital Environment

To search for advanced modulation schemes, coding techniques and protocols to enhance the performance of indoor wireless packet communication links supporting patient monitoring equipment. The research identified specific combinations of trellis code modulation, spread-spectrum and diversity that yield significant reductions (tens of dB) in transmit power in a fading channel. The reduction in transmit power translates into reduced remote unit energy consumption and hence increased operating time.
