Modular Wireless Avionics System for Autonomous UAVs

The goal of this two-year effort is to develop a modular demonstrator system containing a Flight Management, Flight Test, and Communications system. The system would be developed to allow additional modules to be quickly integrated in the system. The flight test module and flight test station will be developed by the University of Kansas (KU), the Flight Management System by Kansas State University (KSU), and the Communications System by Pittsburg State University (PSU). This program will build upon existing human capital and research facilities in the UAV and intelligent vehicles areas. Multiple team members are nationally known in these research areas, and this program will be nationally competitive at its conclusion.
Research will focus on developing an airborne flight test module and the supporting flight test ground station. The flight test module will use wireless communications and will be designed to be easily installed on a variety of UAVs. It will also include a data acquisition unit. The module will be flexible enough that it could also be used to flight-test experimental and production General Aviation aircraft. This module will be developed based on technologies being explored in conjunction with other universities and small Kansas and Kansas City companies. These connections will lead to substantial workforce development within the UAV & aerospace/intelligent vehicles areas.
