Collaborative Project: Assessing the User-base and Expanding the Usability/Reach of the Analytical Sciences Digital Library through Developmental Workshops

Project Award Date: 09-04-2003

Researchers from the University of Kansas, and the University of Illinois-Urbana will increase the effectiveness, value, reach and organizational self-sufficiency of the Analytical Sciences Digital Library (ASDL) through assessment, implementation and user development workshops. The electronic library collects, catalogs, and links web-based information and discovery material pertinent to chemical measurements and instrumentation.

This collaborative project brings together experts in analytical science, library science, and intelligent Internet search and online learning to assess ASDL content and practices and implement changes. ASDL content is organized around the general areas of pedagogy, class material, application, technique, and other collections. Researchers will improve the usability of the collection through the organization of contents based on concept hierarchies. Development of software tools for automated data harvesting and intelligent metadata collection will dramatically improve the efficiency of the editorial staff and allow a rapid increase in both the depth and breadth of current collection contents.

In addition to increasing the value of the collection, its reach will expand into other sub-disciplines within chemistry and to the multidisciplinary field of environmental studies. By partnering with the Eastern Iowa Community College's websites of Advanced Technology Environmental Education Library (ATEEL) and Electronic Environmental Resources Library (eERL), comprehensive coverage in the environmental sciences will become possible. ASDL will provide a mechanism for facilitating the integration of research and teaching through the new Best Practices: Online Articles feature. It will contain examples illustrating effective strategies for integrating cutting-edge research into classroom materials and activities.

National and regional user development workshops will introduce users to ASDL and demonstrate methods for effectively utilizing electronic resources in lecture and lab courses. Coordination with our strategic alliance partners, the Journal of Chemical Education Digital Library and eERL, and with other NSDL projects, in workshop planning and execution will also help broaden the user base from which our participants are drawn and address multidisciplinary applications. A special focus of the user workshops will be on innovative pedagogical approaches such as problem-based or service learning.

Partner with ITTC

The Information and Telecommunication Technology Center at the University of Kansas has developed several assistance policies that enhance interactions between the Center and local, Kansas, or national companies.

ITTC assistance includes initial free consulting (normally one to five hours). If additional support is needed, ITTC will offer one of the following approaches:

Sponsored Research Agreement

Individuals and organizations can enter into agreements with KUCR/ITTC and provide funds for sponsored research to be performed at ITTC with the assistance of faculty, staff and students.

Licensing and Royalty/Equity Agreement

An ITTC goal is the development of investment-grade technologies for transfer to, and marketing by, local, Kansas, and national businesses. To enhance this process, the Center has developed flexible policies that allow for licensing, royalty, and equity arrangements to meet both the needs of ITTC and the company.

Commercialization Development

Companies with a technology need that can be satisfied with ITTC's resources can look to us for assistance. We can develop a relationship with interested partners that will provide for the development of a technology suited for commercialization.

ITTC Resource Access

ITTC resources, including computers and software systems, may be made available to Kansas companies in accordance with the Center's mission and applicable Regents and University policies.
