Ice-thickness Measurement over the Patagonian Glaciers and the Pine Island and Thwaites Glaciers, Antarctica

Project Award Date: 09-15-2002

Description

We propose to deploy an airborne radar system to measure the thickness of the ice sheet over the Patagonian ice fields of Chile and the Pine Island and Thwaites glaciers (PIG and TG) of Antarctica. The radar system will be installed on a Chilean Navy P-3 aircraft with the aid of NASA and the Chilean Navy. This work will be in collaboration with NASA and Chiles Centro de Estudios Cientificos (CECS).

The thickness data we gather will help investigators in their effort to better understand glacier behavior and their drainage channels in these regions. While our radar system was created to measure thickness over cold ice, we will attempt to measure the thickness of the temperate ice sheet over Patagonia.

For this investigation, we will repackage our current radar system, CORDS (COherent Radar Depth Sounder), to make it more compact and rugged. We will install the radar system onboard the Chilean Navy P-3 aircraft during the month of October 2002 and perform a flight test to ensure that the system is functioning correctly. The radar will then take the aforementioned measurements, after which we will process the data and extract ice thickness over flight lines. This information will be made available on a password-protected Web server for NASA and Chilean collaborators within six months after the experiment.

Partner with ITTC

The Information and Telecommunication Technology Center at the University of Kansas has developed several assistance policies that enhance interactions between the Center and local, Kansas, or national companies.

ITTC assistance includes initial free consulting (normally one to five hours). If additional support is needed, ITTC will offer one of the following approaches:

Sponsored Research Agreement

Individuals and organizations can enter into agreements with KUCR/ITTC and provide funds for sponsored research to be performed at ITTC with the assistance of faculty, staff and students.

Licensing and Royalty/Equity Agreement

An ITTC goal is the development of investment-grade technologies for transfer to, and marketing by, local, Kansas, and national businesses. To enhance this process, the Center has developed flexible policies that allow for licensing, royalty, and equity arrangements to meet both the needs of ITTC and the company.

Commercialization Development

Companies with a technology need that can be satisfied with ITTC's resources can look to us for assistance. We can develop a relationship with interested partners that will provide for the development of a technology suited for commercialization.

ITTC Resource Access

ITTC resources, including computers and software systems, may be made available to Kansas companies in accordance with the Center's mission and applicable Regents and University policies.
